A. housewives are poorer than career women B. housewives have more children than career women C. housewives have less chance to communicate with others D. housewives eat less food than career women 43. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Paragraph 2 ? A. Busy people have nothing to do at home. B. High achievers don?t care about their families.

C. There is no friendship and warmth at home. D. A satisfying job helps to keep one healthy. 44. We can infer from the passage that those who do not work _____. A. are likely to live a shorter life A B. will lose everything at home C. can live as long as those who work D. have more time to make new friends 45. The best title for this passage may be _____. A. People Should Find a Job B. Working Hard Is Good for Health C. People Should Make More Friends by Work D. The Loss of Work Means the Loss of Everything

Scientists find that hard-working people live longer than average men and women. Career women are healthier than housewives. Evidence shows that the jobless are in poorer health than jobholders. An investigation shows that whenever the unemployment. Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy away from loneliness. Researches show that people feel unhappy, worried and lonely when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their careers feel that they are happiest when they are working hard. Work serves as a bridge between man and reality. By work people come into with each other. By collective activity they find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work means the loss of everything. It affects man spiritually and makes him ill. Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment and a sense of achievement. Work makes one feel his value and status in society. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are happy beyond words. From the above we can come to the conclusion that the more you work the happier and healthier you will be. Let us work hard and study and live a happy and healthy life.

B What will man be like in the future — in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time. Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller. Again in the modern world we use our brains a great deal.

41. The underlined word “average” in Paragraph I means ______. A. healthy B. lazy C. ordinary D. poor

Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity (容量). As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.

42. The reason why housewives are not as healthy as career women is that ______.

Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald. Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.

C. human beings hope for a change in the future life D. future life is always predictable 50. The passage mainly tells us that _______________. A. man’s life will be different in the future B. man is growing taller and uglier as time passes C. future man will look quite different from us D. human beings’ organs will function weaker

C Speeding off in a stolen car, the thief thinks he has got a great catch. But he is in for an unwelcome surprise. The car is fitted with a remote immobiliser (锁止器), and a radio signal from a control centre miles away will ensure that once the thief switches the engine off, he will not be able to start it again.

46. The size of man’s forehead will probably grow bigger because _______. A. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on B. he makes use only 20% of the brain’s capacity C. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries D. the other 80% of his brain will grow in due time 47. What serves as the evidence that man is changing? A. Man has got stronger eyes now than he ever had. B. Man has been growing taller over the past 500 years. C. Man’s hair is getting thinner and thinner. D. Man’s arms and legs have become lighter and weaker. 48. What will be true about a human being in the future? A. He will be hairless because hair is no longer useful. B. He will have smaller eyes and will wear better glasses. C. His fingers will grow weaker because he won’t have to make use of them. D. He will think and feel in a different way. 49. It is implied that __________________. A. human beings will become more attractive in the future B. body organs will become poorer if they are not used often

The idea goes like this. A control box fitted to the car contains a mini-cellphone, a micro- processor and memory, and a GPS (全球定位系统) satellite positioning receiver. If the car is stolen, a coded cellphone signal will tell the control centre to block the vehicle's engine management system and prevent the engine being restarted. In the UK, a set of technical fixes is already making life harder for car thieves. 'The pattern of vehicle crime has changed,? says Martyn Randall, a security expert. He says it would only take him a few minutes to teach a person how to steal a car, using a bare minimum of tools. But only if the car is more than 10 years old. Modern cars are far tougher to steal, as their engine management computer won't allow them to start unless they receive a unique ID code beamed out by the ignition (点火) key. In the UK, technologies like this have helped achieve a 31% drop in vehicle-related crime since 1997. But determined criminals are still managing to find other ways to steal cars, often by getting hold of the owner's keys. And key theft is responsible for 40% of the thefts of vehicles fitted with a tracking system. If the car travels 100 metres without the driver confirming their ID, the system will send a signal to an operations centre that it has been stolen. The hundred metres minimum avoids false alarms due to inaccuracies in the GPS signal. Staff at the centre will then contact the owner to confirm that the car really is missing, and keep police informed of the vehicle's movements via the car's GPS unit.

51. What's the function of the remote immobilizer fitted to a car? A .To allow the car to lock automatically when stolen. B. To prevent the car thief from restarting it once it stops. C. To help the police make a surprise attack on the car thief. D. To prevent car theft by sending a radio signal to the car owner. 52. By saying 'The pattern of vehicle crime has changed' (Lines 1-2. Para. 3). Martyn Randall suggests that ____. A. self-prepared tools are no longer enough for car theft B. the thief has to make use of computer technology C. it takes a longer time for the car thief to do the stealing D. the thief has lost interest in stealing cars over 10 years old 53. What is essential in making a modern car tougher to steal? A. A GPS satellite positioning receiver. C. A special cellphone signal. B. A unique ID card. D. A coded ignition key.

young people are university graduates. Miss Huang, a 25 year-old girl in Shanghai, gave up her first job in a restaurant because of her parents? objection and her second, the salary. Now she has to stay at home, financially supported by her parents as she did before graduation from college. She said she would wait some time before she started another job as it was not easy to find a job she liked.
