A They say there are three ways to experience the Grand Canyon; on foot, on mules or by air. We chose the first. Up early; my husband and I and our three children couldn’t wait to get started. We decided to walk along a lovely path named Bright Angel Trail. As we set out, I was shocked at how narrow the path was. And I couldn’t help noticing that the other tourists weren’t like us. They had heavy backpacks, water bottles, and hats. But as usual we were dressed. As the sun rose higher, Arizona’s famous heat seemed to roast us. There was no shade and our legs were aching. We decided to go back, with the girl on my back and the boys far behind. By the time we finally got back, our legs were like jelly. The next day, after we’d had a long rest and a good breakfast, we were ready for another view of the Canyon – by air. After our last walk, this would be the easiest thing in the world. We called to each other excitedly as the plane took off and circled around the Canyon. But the smiles on our faces disappeared as the pilot tossed the plane around, pretending he was going to hit the ground. I shouted, “STOP, TAKE US BACK!” When

we finally arrived back on land, once again our legs were like jelly. We hardly spoke as we drove back. As I said, there are three ways to view the Grand Canyon. We never tried the mules, but personally I’d suggest a fourth: buy yourself a good magazine like National Geographic. That way, you can see the Canyon, without fear or tiredness. 46. Which of the following is true according to the second paragraph? A. They made a careful preparation before the trip B. The children were more joyful than their parents. C. Bright Angel Trail was not as lovely as they expected. D. The summer heat prevented them from enjoying the view. 47. The underlined expression “ Our legs were like jelly” probably means . A. we were weak B. we were unhappy C. we were dissatisfied D. we were disappointed 48. Which of the following best describes their Canyon trip by air? A. It proved to be frightening. B. It was more comfortable C. It turned out to be exciting D. It made each of them tired. 49. We can infer from the passage that . A. experiencing the Canyon on mules would be the best way B. one needs to dress more when visiting the Grand Canyon. C. the writer was not serious when she made the suggestion. D. the whole family narrowly escaped from the air accident. B It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While most peop le were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone. The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only Transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to g et groceries(食品杂货), saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live. I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that 1 wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in bur area o ffered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is all honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before. People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of

kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性)as a whole. And i t has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, all act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting. 50. Why was the bike so important to the couple? A. The man’s job was bike racing. B. It was their only possession. C. They used it for work and daily life. D. It was a nice Kona 18 speed. 51. We can infer from the text that_________. A. the couple worked 60 hours a week B. people were busy before Christmas. C. the stranger brought over the bike D. life was hard for the young family 52. How did people get to know the couple’s problem? A. From radio broadcasts. B. From TV news. C. From a newspaper. D. From a stranger. 53. What do the couple learn from their experience? A. Strangers are usually of little help. B. An act of kindness can mean a lot. C. News reports make people famous. D. One should take care of their bike. C Some people think that as more and more people have televisions in their homes, fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers. Why read an article in the newspaper, when the TV news can bring you the information in a few minutes and with pictures? Why read the life story of a famous man, when a short television program can tell you all that you want to know? Television has not killed reading, however. Today, newspapers sell in very large numbers. And books of every kind are sold more than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and enjoyment. Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are printed today as paperbooks (平装本), which are quite cheap. A paperback collection of short stories, for example, is always cheaper than an evening at the cinema or the theater, and you can keep a book for ever and read it many times. Books are a wonderful provider of knowledge and pleasure and some types of books should be in every home. Every home should have a good dictionary. A good encyclopedia (百科全书), though expensive, is useful, too, because you can find information on any subject. Besides, you can have such books as history books, science textbook, cookbooks, and collections of stories and poems. Then from time to time you can take a book of poems off your shelves and read the thoughts and feelings of your favorite poets. 54. It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A. TV programs are a chief provider of knowledge.

B. cinemas are the best choice in getting information. C. newspapers are an expensive way to enjoy oneself. D. reading is a cheap way of learning and having fun. 55. What does the sentences “Television has not killed reading, however” underlined in the second paragraph suggest? A. People only need reading, though. B. Reading is more fun than television. C. Reading is still necessary today. D. Watching television doesn’t help reading. 56. What can we learn from the passage? A. Fewer and fewer people will buy books. B. A good dictionary should be kept in every home. C. Books with hard covers sell better than paperbooks. D. More people like TV programs about famous men. D In Canada you can find dogs, cats, horses, etc. in almost every family. These are their pets. People love these pets and have them as their good friends. Before they keep them in their houses, they take them to animal hospitals to give them injections(注射) so that they won’t carry disease. They have special animal food stores, though they can get animal food in almost every kind of store. Some people spend around two hundred Canadian dollars a month on animal food. When you visit people’s houses, they would be very glad to show you their pets and they are very proud of them. You will also find that almost every family has a bird feeder in their garden. All kinds of birds are welcomed to come and have a good meal. They are free to come and go and nobody is allowed to kill any animal in Canada. They have a law against killing wild animals. If you killed an animal, you would be punished. If an animal happened to get run over by a car, people would be very sad about it. People in Canada have many reasons to like animals. One of them might be:Their family ties are not as close as ours. When children grow up, they leave their parents and start their own life. Then the old will feel lonely. But pets can solve this problem. They can be good friends and never leave them alone. 57. The passage mainly talks about . A. how to keep disease from pets B. pets in Canada C. how to take good care of pets D. life of the old in Canada 58. They give their pets injections before keeping them at their houses because . In Canada, children leave their parents when they grow up because A. they wouldn’t depend on their parents any more B. they can only find jobs far from their parents C. their parents’ houses are too small D. they don’t love their parents any more

For one thing, it can provide a colorful platform to show our talent, and it is a way to release pressure after work. But many parents and teachers hold the different view. They think that managing one’s blog costs us much time and energy. Therefore, it’s difficult for us to concentrate attention on the school work. In my opinion, I am in favor of this activity. Nowadays internet is playing such an essential role in our life that we can’t ignore its influence. Blog itself is of no harm. As students, we should be encouraged to make the most of this useful tool to communicate and display ourselves. What’s more, through organizing blog, we can improve our language skills. The most important thing is that we should take its advantages and avoid bad effects.
