Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space, died on Monday after a 17-month battle with cancer, her company said. She was 61. Sally lived her life to the fullest, with boundless energy, curiosity, intelligence, passion, commitment and love. Her integrity was absolute; her spirit was immeasurable; her approach to life was fearless, ” read a statement on the website of Sally Ride Science, a company she started to help teach students, particularly young women and girls, about science, math and technology. Sally flew into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1983 to become America’s first woman in space. The next year, she took a second trip aboard the same shuttle in October. The first woman in space was Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova who orbited the earth 48 times in 1963. She was assigned to a third flight, but that was cancelled after the Challenger exploded shortly after lift-off in 1986, claiming the lives of seven crew members on board. Sally helped investigate that accident and later that of Space Shuttle Columbia, becoming the only person to serve on the commissions investigating both accidents. In 2003, the Columbia crashed during

re-entry the atmosphere, killing all seven crew members.

“As the first American woman to travel into space, Sally was a national hero and a powerful role model,” President Barack Obama said soon after the news of her death broke. “She inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars and later fought tirelessly to help them get there by advocating for a greater focus on science and math in our schools. Sally’s life showed us that there are no limits to what we can achieve.” As a Los Angeles native, Sally attended Stanford University, where she earned four degrees, including a doctorate in physics, according to NASA. She joined the agency as part of the class of 1978, the first to include women. Sally responded to an ad in the Stanford student newspaper and was selected from some 8,000 applicants. 46. 48. In Obama’s speech, he stressed______. A. The model encouragement from Sally B. Sally’s interest in space travel C. young girl’s bright future D. the importance of science and math 49. From the passage, we learn that Sally______. A. was the first woman to fly in space B. started a school to focus on rights for women C. flew in space three times in total D. had a good academic performance B The American Community Survey(ACS) is an outgoing survey designed to provide communities a fresh look on how they are changing, which provides data every year — giving communities the current information they need to plan investments and service. The ACS collects information such as age, race, income, home value, and other important data. Information about individuals will remain confidential because participating in the American Community Survey is safe.

Your address was selected as a part of a sample and represents thousands of other households like yours. We randomly select about 3 million addresses each year to participate in the survey. Your answers are important. As part of a sample, you represent many people. Find out how each question helps your community, your state, and the federal government in questions in the form and why we ask. The information that the Census Bureau collects helps to determine how more than $400 billion dollars of federal funding each year is spent on infrastructure(基础 建设) and services. Your answer help state and local leaders make decisions about programs and investments such as new highway, schools, hospitals, job training, community centers and emergency services. Do you have questions about the American Community Survey? Have you lost the form? Would you rather complete the form over the phone? Respond by mail: Fill out the form and mail it back in the postage-paid return envelope. If you have trouble answering a question, call us and we will help you. Respond by phone: Call 1-800-354-7271 to answer the American Community Survey over the phone, or for other help. If we don’t hear from you by mail or phone, a Census Bureau field representative may visit you in person to help you complete the American Community Survey. 50. According to the passage, the purpose of ACS is to _______. A. help people to answer the questions provided by them. A. attract more people to attend the activities of the ACS B. introduce something about the ACS C. show the ACS is a very important organization D. tell readers how to help the ACS C A warm blanket is the ideal sleep aid for a freezing winter night. The right blanket can warm your bones but the wrong one can affect your sleep. I asked experts for advice on picking the perfect blanket for a good night’s sleep. Here’s what

they told me. When it comes to sleep temperature, experts recommend following the principle: not too cold, not too hot, but just right. “People seem to sleep best at temperature between 62 and 70 degrees F,” says Dr. Alice Hoagland. When the surrounding temperature falls too low, it can rouse you from sleep. A good blanket helps drive the coldness away. At the other extreme, overheating yourself can affect your sleep as well. “Core body temperature typically drops during the first four hour’s of sleep,” says Dr. Hoagland. This decline in body temperature helps you fall asleep and stay asleep. “In medical care, weighted blankets are one of our most powerful tools for helping people who are anxious, upset, and possibly losing control,” says Dr. Karen Moore. These special blankets are filled with weighted pellets Weighted blankets are also marketed for general use as an aid to sleep and relaxation. Like a firm hug, weighted blankets help us feel safe.” This is the reason why many people like to sleep under a blanket even in summer. “If you want to try this type of blanket, the best weight depends on your body size and personal preference. However, 15 to 30 pounds is typical for adults,” Moor says. She adds that weighted blankets are not recommended for those recovering from surgery. “People can also have serious preferences for a particular blanket,” says Dr. Hoagland. “Regularly using a favorite blanket for sleep can help to develop a conditioned response so that sleep onset is quicker.” In fact, many sleep centers ask patients to bring their own blanket and pillow from home, which helps them fall asleep more easily. 53. The author wrote the passage mainly to tell us _____. A. the importance of blankets B. how to choose the perfect blanket C. different materials used to make blankets D. the history and usage of blankets 54. The underlined word “rouse” in Paragraph 2 is the closest in meaning to “______”. A. wake up B. take up C. make up D. pick up 55. What do we know from the passage? A. Body temperature rises when we fall asleep B. The perfect sleep temperature should be above 70 degrees F. C. Weighted blankets should be at least 30 pounds. D. People are advised to use their own blankets. 56. What is the structure of the passage?

D An abandoned car in Chicago worth about $600 has been issued more than $100,000 in parking tickets over the past three years. Now Jennifer Fitzgerald, 31, is stuck with the bill but says the 1999 Chevy Monte Carlo actually belongs to an ex-boyfriend who registered the car in her name without informing her. The Expired Meter reports that from May 23, 2009 to April 30, 2012, the Chicago Department of Finance (DOF) issued 678 tickets against the car, totaling $105,761.80. It set a Chicago record both for the total number and amount of parking fines issued. In fact, it blew past the previous record holder, which was $65,000 from about 400 tickets. But Fitzgerald says she doesn’t owe the city a dime and has filed a lawsuit (诉讼) in Cook County Circuit Court against the city of Chicago, United Airlines and the ex-boyfriend. Fitzgerald has two main arguments in her case. First, she says her ex-boyfriend, Brandon Preveau, is the actual owner of the car, having purchased it from her uncle for $600 in 2008. In fact, Preveau paid for the car’s title, registration and insurance, but it was registered in Fitzgerald’s name. “Brandon used his income tax refund to pay Patrick $600 for the automobile,” reads Fitzgerald’s complaint. “For some reasons not recalled by Patrick, however, Patrick signed the title to the car over to Jennifer.” Second, Fitzgerald’s lawyer is arguing that the city should have simply towed the vehicle after 30 days from O’Hare Airport, where it was parked and where Preveau worked at the time. According to Fitzgerald’s complaint, on or before November 17, 2009, Brandon drove the car into the parking lot and never drove it out again. And as the Expired Meter reports, Chicago law does specify that an abandoned vehicle is to be towed 30 days after being illegally parked. 57. After the Chicago Department of Finance noticed the car, it_______. A. wanted to break a record

B. tried its best to find its owner C. kept issuing tickets against the car D. decided to play a joke on its owner 58. From Paragraph 3, we know that Jennifer Fitzgerald_______. A. sold the car to her ex-friend long ago B. received the car from her ex-boyfriend C. didn’t know anything about the car D. wasn’t the real owner of the car 59. Jennifer Fitzgerald filed a lawsuit against the city of Chicago because the city___. A. didn’t inform her immediately it found the missing car B. didn’t tow the vehicle after 30 days from O’Hare Airport C. didn’t specify that an abandoned vehicle was to be towed D. didn’t help her find the car when it was missing in the beginning 60. After reading the passage we learn that Jennifer Fitzgerald_____. A. doesn’t want to pay any money B. thinks Patrick should pay the fines C. isn’t trying to find her ex-boyfriend D. has never been to O’Hare Airport E 根据短文内容,从下框的 A~F 选项中的选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项, 选项中有一项为多余项。 A. Apologize B. Take responsibility C. Listen and respond D. Acknowledge the mistake directly E. Give the other person time to think and respond F. Offer a practical way to make up for the mistake Fixing mistakes: 5 steps for any situation 61._________________ Don’t ignore the mistake already made in the hopes that it will go away. Whether you’ve messed up on a customer order or forgotten your wife’s birthday, ignoring the failure won’t make it seem less important; it will just make you seem like more of a fool. Be straightforward. Directly and briefly, but honestly, admit that you messed up. State specifically what you did and how much you regret it. 62._________________ The automatic response of human nature is to jump into the self-defense mode.

Resist the urge to find somewhere or someone to put the blame, even if it’s justified. Don’t point fingers or use circumstances to make an excuse; doing so only makes you sound like you care more about getting out of trouble than really dealing with the problem you’ve caused, however unintentionally. 63. __________________ Those two little words— I’m sorry — need to be heard by the person who’s bearing the brunt(冲击) of your mistake. “Please forgive me.” is nice, too. It shows that you understand this person has a choice of whether or not to forgive the mistake. And it puts the responsibility on the offended person, forcing them to either accept the apology, or choose to ignore or refuse your apology. Nobody wants to be the bad guy and refuse to accept an apology. 64. __________________ In a few cases, there’s really nothing you can do to compensate for what’s been done. However, in most cases, you can think of a way to make compensation. If you’ve hurt someone you’re close to on a deep level, you might offer to go to counseling together. If you do not know what to offer, ask: “What can I do to make this up to you?” 65. __________________ The deeper the hurt, the more difficult it is for a person to let go of it. Don’t force an immediate response. People need time to think and to let go of hurt feelings and offense. Step back and say something like, “I’ll give you time to think this over” Offer another, specific time to talk so you don’t forget to follow through with what you’ve said.
